The Zerah Priestly Carter University of Evansville African American Scholarship
Ms. Zerah Priestly Carter '38, Bachelor of Science in Education, played a unique role in the shaping of the African American tradition at UE since she was the first African American to graduate from Evansville College. As an esteemed educator in the Evansville public school system for many years, Ms. Carter influenced many African Americans who subsequently matriculated at UE. The UEAAA wishes to recognize Ms. Carter as the pioneer who laid the foundation of the UE African American Tradition by naming our scholarship in her honor, the Zerah Priestly Carter University of Evansville African American Scholarship. The Zerah Priestly Carter University of Evansville African American Scholarship is an endowed scholarship that will extend into perpetuity. Thus, it is a permanent example of UE African American tradition. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving African American student. The scholarship will be a source of financial support to students; but, more importantly, it will be another way that students not only can identify with the UE African American tradition, but also help carry on the tradition by contributing to the University and the community with their gifts of time, talent, and treasure.
